Holiday Goings-On

Whew! We have been very busy around here, but I am going to try and give an abbreviated version of what we have been doing- while Emme is sitting on my lap! Yikes!

Here is cutie Emme the Sunday after we put up the tree. Never again will I try to decorate with all the kids at home. We worked for two days to have the whole house all clean, so that we could have a fun day of decorating and then make cookies. But it was terrible!! Alex kept going behind me and undoing everything and the other kids were pulling out everything from the boxes. I was rather cranky the whole time and have decided that it would be a nicer memory for the kids to come home from school and be all excited that Mom decorated while they were gone. Rather than, "I remember decorating with my Mom every year. And she was always so mad!" Lesson learned. Sometimes your "vision" has to be re-adjusted for reality.
Another lesson- Thanksgiving Eve. After decorating, the next day we were going to ring in the holidays with a Christmas movie and popcorn and hot chocolate. I wanted it all to be so nice and the house all clean, especially since the next day everyone was coming to our house for Thanksgiving. By the end of the day, I felt overwhelmed and the house was a mess! I felt so discouraged, that once again, no matter how hard I tried, it wasn't what I wanted it to be. But, I walked away from all the mess, we pulled the couch up close and Danny made a fire, we had hot chocolate and popcorn and watched Mickey's Christmas Carol. And guess what? It was so fun! In fact, afterwards Tristan kept saying, "That was so fun!!" The lesson learned this time- just because it isn't perfect to you, doesn't mean it isn't wonderful to the kids. They really weren't worried about the sink of dishes anyway.
So here is a picture of us as we got under way.
Alex being Santa for Alaina. He wanted people to sit on his lap so badly. And Alaina really took it seriously and thought about it when he asked her what she wanted for Christmas.

Thanksgiving was super fun, relaxed and pleasant. Lots of food, lots of talking, afterwards we watched Jeopardy episodes and laid around. Haley and Dallin came for dessert, and we were all deliciously lazy.

See how big Irelyn is? I am going to put on pictures of her right away. She is changing so fast!!
Ward Christmas Chalet- Emme and Josh hugging beforehand. The best part of the Chalet was- I wasn't in charge of anything. And I was so glad. :)
Christmas party at the Gables. Alex cornered Santa and sang Christmas songs to him. Santa was very accommodating and Alex was very happy.
Their party was great and I wish I had gotten more pictures! Lots of delicious food and singers and Santa and great decorations. I was grateful that we got to go.
Silly Alex. He found a way to combine his two favorite holidays, Halloween and Christmas.
The kids had over two weeks off for Christmas. They don't go back until this Tuesday. It is really hard to take all 5 kids places by themselves, but we can't just stay at home all the time! So I tried to take them all to the mall to see Santa. It was..okay.... until the end, when I swore I would never take them all somewhere by myself again! But, we did see Santa! (Tristan is behind the poinsettias.)

Well, this takes us to Christmas. I will stop for now so that you can breathe. But brace yourself, Christmas pics to come soon!! I know you can hardly wait!!

Oh, I loved all your pictures! Isn't it crazy how as the mom we have all of these ideas of how we want things to be and yet it never seems to end up that way? And the kids don't care?! It's hard to keep in mind that the kids really could care less if the house is pretty when they watch their Christmas movie. (Which is why it is always so messy. They don't care!)
Alex is so funny with his Santa obsessions, and his Santa/Halloween costume is SCARY! He's kind of like those Santa's that you do NOT want to take your kids to see!
Alaina's dress is sooo pretty on her! And is there a kid in the same dress at the Christmas Chalet? It looked like their was, but don't worry. It looked better on Alaina. :)
I can't wait for you to show more pictures and tell more about what went on at your house on Christmas! We still haven't gotten to talk about it all yet!

P.S.
We are very envious that you have a REAL fireplace!!! It is one of our dreams to fix the one here so it actually works. Maybe then we won't have to be so dependent on our new (but keeps breaking) furnace!

I know you like comments soooo (this is Danny bytheway hahaha)

you must be busy with all the blogging you're not doing j/k
Putting up the Christmas tree sounded so frustrating, where you thought it would be one way and it ended up totally different. it would like boarding a plane going to Hawaii & the plane has an emergency landing in Mongolia and Hawaii has been destroyed by hurricane "ALEX"
I think the coming home from school and seeing mom has decorated is an awesome idea...there's nothing better than coming home and all the Halloween & fall stuff is taken down and Christmas is here...you're decorating is like walking into Santa clauses house, so warm & twinkly lights & red & green everywhere mmmmmm, What you should do is have cups of coco waiting for them.
EMMY LOOKS SO CUTE!!!!! She should be a model...
that thanksgiving eve movie time sounds so fun loooooks soooo cozy
thanksgiving is fun when it's so relaxed.
wow Irelyn is so cute & growing fast

Awww, first of all, I gotta admit, I'm so jealous that Danny is commenting on your blog posts! It would be so fun if Dallin did that, like we were having a real conversation or something! :) And I also loved that Danny spelled Emme's name wrong. :) Ha!
Yes, that was crazy when we tried to get pictures of the kids with Santa at the mall, and then that I had to leave you, I'm SORRY! I felt so bad!
Your house is so cozy during Christmastime. It's wonderful that you were able to let go and just enjoy the movie without too much stress. I always have pictures in my head of Dallin and I having dates together, or Family Home Evening with Hunter too, and they never turn out like the pictures! It's one of those things Pres. Monson talked about in his christmas Devotional talk, where we can't expect it to be picture perfect or we'll be disappointed.
Anyhoo, keep writing on here! Irelyn is to die for, she's so cute, she even did me a favor and smiled really big at Dallin while he held her at church. I think he likes her more now, yesssss. :)

You should dress Alex like that for Halloween! That looks so cool!
I love the pictures and stories. The living room looks great in the picture where you said the house was a mess - looks very cozy! I'm glad you went ahead and ignored the rest of the house!
And the holidays at your house were really peaceful and enjoyable for us, so thank you!

I loved this post! Emme is getting sooo big, and so is Irelyn. And I loved Alex's combination of Halloween and christmas. He looks like Jack from The Nightmare before Christmas! And I like how you said that even though the hosue wasn't "perfect" like you wanted it to be, the kids didn't notice and they were happy to do something all together. I think that's cute.
